The NCS System is 100 % visually based. From the 6 elementary colors (1) we can describe all 10 million colors that we can perceive. The NCS Colour Space (2) is based on these 6 colors, with white at the top in the center, black at the bottom and the four chromatic elementary colors positioned opposite each other in the middle of the space.
We have selected 2050 NCS standard colors from the NCS color space, which represent the entire color space.

We always navigate the NCS Colour Circle (3) clockwise starting from Y (yellow) and adding more and more redness to the hue until we reach the pure red hue R (Red).

Each Hue has different Nuances shown in the NCS Colour Triangle (4). Here we can select between nuances with different whiteness, blackness and chromaticness.
When you have selected a color, you will get an NCS Notation for that color, the exact visual description that will tell you which hue the color has, how black/chromatic/white the color is.

Example: S 1040-R20B describes that the color is Red with 20% Blue. It has a blackness of 10% and a chromaticness of 40%, that means that the whiteness is 50% (The nuance is always 100%).
